Ageism remains the most common form of discrimination in the UK, in large part due to the failure to place it on the same legal footing as other forms of discrimination. The equality bill provides an opportunity to address this by protecting older people from unfair discrimination in the provision of goods and services, and by requiring public bodies to promote age equality. Ageism is sometimes completely in the open. People use offensive language about older people when equivalent descriptions of minority ethnic groups or disabled people are socially unacceptable. Ageism is rampant among younger managers who otherwise pride themselves on their inclusiveness. A couple of years ago Network World surveyed readers with some degree of hiring responsibility.
