Any addiction is self destructive, regardless of what the addiction is. Those who become addicted lose self control and indulge all the time. They cannot help themselves and are to be pitied. However, recovering from substance abuse addiction is going to be a difficult choice for the person to make. The best thing is that they have realised that they have a problem and are trying to do something about it. For this they are to be admired and encouraged because it will be a very long and hard path to take. There will be times where they find it so hard to carry on and will want to fall back into the old ways.
