Simply put, colocation hosting is a matter of you putting your own server on the data center’s rack.  You may choose to purchase a new computer for this purpose, but many just put together an existing computer with the necessary components.

The biggest benefit of colocation hosting may be the controlled temperature and humidity their location provides.  Additionally they handle the security from theft, fire, flood, etc. and backup systems in case of power loss, and the support of their IT team.

You, the server owner are still responsible for maintenance and any upkeep of your server.  It may well be worth the minimal cost to keep your server in a secure place while you still retain control of all your equipment.
